Origins
Traditional head massage ("champi" or "champissage") has been practised
for over a thousand years in India. The use of different oils according
to the season kept women's hair strong, lustrous and in beautiful
condition. Head Massage would also be offered by barbers.
Modern methods were perfected by Mr. Narendra Mehta. He came to the UK
and was disappointed not to be able to have an Indian Head Massage here.
He returned to India to learn the therapy and then returned to the UK to
teach practitioners here, thereby spreading the knowledge.
One of the most important developments of modern Indian Head Massage was
the introduction of an Ayurvedic element of chakra energy balancing and
the extension of the massage element to include massage of the face and
ears, enhancing the overall effect.
Technique
Indian Head Massage is a technique of manipulating soft tissues in the
shoulders and scalp. The therapist uses a range of different massage
pressures and rhythms to stimulate the head and neck area. A typical
massage lasts about 20 minutes. The technique releases muscle tension
and stimulates circulation. This fully oxygenates the cells. It also
stretches and mobilises the tissues of the neck and shoulders and
stimulates lymphatic drainage.
It stimulates and improves scalp circulation which helps to promote
texture combined with strength and growth of hair, it relaxes the scalp
and tones up subcutaneous muscles thus helping to relieve headaches, eye
strain and to focus concentration.
The technique soothes, comforts and harmonises the body's natural
balance, so helping to promote physical and psychological well being
leaving you with a feeling of peace and tranquillity.
To summarise: The combination of techniques used…
1. Aids the circulatory, muscular and nervous systems
2. Stimulates arterial circulation, and increases venous and lymphatic
flow
3. Reduces stress and can induce a feeling of euphoria
4. Frees knots of muscular tension and relaxes connective tissue
5. Stimulates the skin and underlying nerve endings
6. Aids in the elimination of accumulated toxins and waste products
Accessibility
The techniques of Indian Head Massage require the skin, muscles and
bones to be gently moved and stimulated. This can be done with or
without clothing and this is entirely up to the client. Oils are also
optional. The Indian Head Massage is practiced with the
client sitting on a hard-backed chair for the first part, and then lying
down on a treatment couch for the remainder.
